Claire Attwood visits South Africa's Mossel Bay
CATCHES in South Africa's inshore trawl fishery are lower than for 27 years and the local industry is doubtful whether it will land its annual 872-ton sole quota.
The sole fishery is South Africa's oldest trawl fishery and dates back to the 1890s.
About 32 inshore trawlers of less than 30 metres catch shallow-water hake (Merluccius capensis) and Agulhas sole (Austroglossus pectoralis) off South Africa's southeast coast.
Soles are trawled close inshore between Mossel Bay and Cape Agulhas, while hake are fished further offshore to 130 metres.
