SCOTTISH and Irish midwater trawlers landing to Norwegian processing factories in the last two weeks have been getting around £1000 per tonne for big mackerel, reports David Linkie.
Although demand and price for G5/G6 fish has been strong since UK boats resumed fishing western mackerel in October, a number of factors have combined in the last two months to drive prices even higher as Norwegian buyers compete with each other to secure fish.
As a large proportion of Norwegian boats finished their quotas some time ago and with mackerel once again proving evasive in UK waters since late October, supplies to processing factories on either side of the North Sea were almost nonexistent during November.
