THIS WEEK 20 YEARS AGO SCOTTISH fishermen's leaders are upset at a blanket EEC ban on North Sea saithe fishing following a round of 'tit for tat' overfishing by the Germans and French, fearing the closure could have future repercussions on British fishing.
A WORLD record was set in Grimsby when the Icelandic stern trawler Slettanes, skippered by V Arnasson, grossed £144,502 from 2543 kits of boxed fish – caught from a 15day trip in Icelandic waters.
WILLIAM Sampson Stevenson (PZ 191), a W Stevenson Newlyn beamer, completed a 900 mile round trip to Stellendam, Holland, when she towed out the 68ft Sarah Shaun to the Maaskant yard for a complete refit and renewal of her engine and gearbox, and returned with a new wheelhouse for the 90ft Marie Claire (pictured).
