Following successful trials in Sintef Fisheries flume tanks at Hirtshals, Jackson Trawls has supplied its first hexagonal mesh midwater trawl to the 61m Fraserburgh pelagic vessel Taits.
As a result of an early finish to the winter mackerel fishery, Taits used this 1700m single boat net for the first time last month when fishing Atlanto-Scanto herring off the Norwegian coast.
Made from hand spliced braided nylon, the new design uses 38m hexagonal meshes, based on three 12.8m legs in the wings and the top sections of the trawl.
