IN 1986 Larissa Fedorova was one of 1000 engineers working in the offices of a Russian state-run Baltic shipping company.The sudden dawning of Perestroika ended travel restrictions on Russians and she was able to leave behind her dead-end job to hitch-hike to the West. She soon joined the fishing industry and now owns one SuperAtlantic trawler catching horse mackerel in Namibian waters and two Atlantic 333 freezer ships exploiting deep water species in international waters.
