Ireland’s Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA), the independent statutory body responsible for enforcing the state’s sea fisheries and seafood safety laws, is prioritizing the implementation of new regulations during its seasonal program of inshore patrols, which also began last month.
The new regulations were introduced to protect the licensed fishing industry, which has faced increasing competition in recent years from unlicensed or unregistered vessels operating on a commercial or semi-commercial basis.
Under the new regulations, recreational or private fishers can fish up to a maximum six pots (traps), and can retain no more than five crabs and one lobster per day.
