The mossy green waters girdling Kochi – a stunningly beautiful city in the south Indian state of Kerala – has lured many a foreign traveller, and the distinctive looking Chinese fishing nets dotting the city’s bank is on the ‘must see’ list of many. Though Fishing News International went to India to research for this feature, the touristy aspect of this fishing method spoke volumes about the fate of the ordinary Indian fisherman. In a land where the law of the jungle holds sway, matters such as forward-looking regulations to protect stocks and curbing the harm done by environmental pollution come near rock-bottom in the government’s priority list.
