Iceland’s Ministry of Industries and Innovation, which includes fisheries, announced a 20,000 metric ton increase to the mackerel quota for 2017, according to documents on its website released April 5.
This year’s quota has been set at 168,424 metric tons.
Permissible total fish catch of mackerel in 2016 was set at 147,824 metric tons, implying a hike of more than 20,000 metric tons.
Vessel operators who intend to engage in fishing mackerel must apply for authorization to the Directorate of Fisheries by April 10, the document said.
