A GROUP in England is developing Crustastun - a device for the 'humane' slaughter of crustaceans in answer to public concern over many food animal slaughter practices.

Work is being carried out at the University of Bristol's food animal science department in conjunction with the Silsoe Research Department, and partially funded by the Humane Slaughter Association and the University Fund for Animal Welfare.

Crustastun uses a low voltage current to deliver an instant stun to the crustacean. It is said not to affect the appearance, flavour or texture of the meat, or produce the claw-shedding reflex in crabs.
