It’s mid-December and we’re at Mahu Kona watching several small boats – in the 20+ foot range – fishing the edge of the Alenuihaha Channel off the North Kohala (northwest) Coast of Hawaii Island, regionally known as the Big Island.

 

We put in a call to Mike deWilde, our occasional fishing partner, to see if one of the boats is his.

 

“No,” Mike replies.

 

He’s further south near Kawaihae Port in the open ocean off the South Kohala Coast.
