SQUID plays such a major role in the cuisine and culture of Hakodate that the city even has a dance devoted to it.

Every year, at the port festival in August, the citizens of Hakodate perform a dance called the Ika-odori (Squid Dance), mimicking the wiggly motions of their favourite cephalopod.

This obsession with squid is derived from its abundance in the surrounding waters, with 30,000 tonnes landed into the port last year.
