The recent arrival in Co Galway of the new 24.7 metre twin rig trawler Maggie C G 497 created great interest, particularly on the Aran Island of Inishmore, the home of the vessel's skipper/owners Cliona, Greg and John Conneely.
Maggie C is named after their mother, Maggie Conneely, and was built at the Socarenam yard in Boulogne with financial assistance under Ireland's Fishing Fleet Development Measure.
The investment is a bold statement of confidence by the Conneely family both in the future of stocks and the ability of the Irish government to ensure that local fishermen have a viable proportion of the catches west of Ireland.
