EU fisheries management -- already a byword for cumbersome and slow-moving bureaucracy -- could degenerate further into a bureaucratic and political nightmare now that the European Parliament must be involved in decision-making.
Members of European Parliament (MEPs) now have an equal say in decision-making with the European Commission and Council of Ministers following the Lisbon Treaty, but nobody yet knows just how the new co-decision making process will work in practice.
But it is already becoming clear that the new situation has created severe tensions between MEPs and the Commission/Council of Ministers as the MEPs take up their new powers.
