Killybegs firm Barry Electronics is extremely optimistic about the health of the Irish fisheries. Recently it added 1500sq ft to its premises, giving much more storage and repair space.
The company's senior projects leader, Chris Joyce, says the new Furuno low frequency FSV-24 sonar for mackerel seems to be giving fishermen an edge.
"Brendelen, Father McKee and Antarctic have all installed the new sonar. It is very successful at detecting pelagic fish down to 1700m, " he says.
Simrad's echosounders are also popular at detecting biomass.
"Some
