A new study co-authored by researchers at the University of California Santa Barbara and Columbia University finds overfishing isn't the sole cause of dramatic declines in Atlantic cod stocks off New England.

The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, points to the climatological phenomenon known as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) as a contributing factor in the stock's collapse.

And the NASO contributes in a predictable way that may enable fishery managers to protect cod stocks from future collapse, the researchers said.
