Based at Grindavík in the south of Iceland, fishing company Einhamar has taken delivery of a pair of new Cleopatra 50 fully shelterdecked longliners from Trefjar in Hafnarfjördur. The 30gt Gísli Súrsson GK-8, skippered by Haraldur Björn Björnsson and Audur Vésteins GK-88, skippered by Haukur Einarsson, take their names from Icelandic historical figures. The new boats measure 15m overall and replace older Cleopatra 38 boats built in 2003 and 2006. Changes in legislation last year that shifted the goalposts for operators within the quota regime fishing exclusively with hooked fishing gear, moving the upper vessel limit from 15gt to 30gt has made it possible for Einhamar to switch to these larger and safer boats with a significantly higher carrying capacity.
