SOUTH AFRICA’S squid fishing industry, which catches between 2000 and 10,000 tonnes a year of high quality loligo, is part-way through its newly-introduced four-week season closure in July and August, writes Claire Attwood.

This closure is being enforced by Marine and Coastal Management (MCM) to curb fishing effort and is in addition to a two-week closure in March and April, and another lasting five weeks in October and November .

Fishing effort spikes “beyond target levels” when there is a high abundance of squid are included in the reasons for the closures.
