Dutch fishermen say mesh gauge is ‘recording wrong size’

The Dutch fishermen’s union has received many complaints about the new Omega mesh width gauge which is being used in conjunction with the

old manual gauge by Dutch fishery inspectors, reports Bert Scheijgrond.

The Dutch inspection authorities continue to give warnings to fishermen with meshes of the right width when measured with the manual gauge but shown to be too small when measured with the mechanical Omega gauge.

Fishermen claim that during inspections at sea the Omega gauge always gives a reading of mesh width as being too small while the mesh width measured by the manual gauge is showing the same mesh to be of correct size.
