TONY Meddle, a leading figure in the cockle industry at Leigh on Sea, Essex, died on 31 December aged 74.

His whole life, from the age of 14 when he first went raking cockles, until quite recently, when he helped run the family cockle boat and processing plant with his sons Gary and Steve, was linked to shellfish.

He was a founder member of the Leigh Cockle Merchants' Association and represented the Thames cockle industry on the Kent and Essex Sea Fisheries Committee and the Shellfish Association of Great Britain.
