Fish quality and crew safety are of vital and growing importance in the modern fishing industry.

Vessel designers are increasingly conscious of these considerations when designing new vessels.

Some of the latest thinking on safety and quality has resulted in some radical concepts in modern trawler design. These include a stern trawler with an aft docking sluice chamber to accept the codend, a medium size stern trawler design with an enclosed stern and an elevating/tilting stern ramp to reduce fish crushing, and a pelagic trawler with an enclosed foredeck and fish and water separation area.
