KILKEEL skipper Charlie McBride and his son Charles had the large sums they owe as penalties for illegal fishing significantly reduced to a “manageable” amount at Liverpool Crown Court last Friday (16 October), reports David Linkie.

The reduction, which has lifted the cloud of uncertainty and stress that has hung over them for the last six and a half years, followed a successful appeal by the pair’s legal team for the repayment orders against them to be varied downwards.

Defending London barrister Ian Lawrie, who has been involved in the case from the start said: “It was a very good result and I was very pleased on their behalf that for the first time some commonsense was injected into the case by the court.”
