It is derived from the company's original name when it was set up in 1873 as a cooperative of Grimsby fishing vessel owners: The Great Grimsby Coal, Salt and Tanning Company. This impressive name resounds with Victorian entrepreneurship, oak panelled boardrooms and moustached men with watches on chains in their waistcoat pockets.
