THE L27/38 - MAN B&W Alpha's new-generation propulsion engine (see FNI September 1999) - is a medium-speed diesel claimed to offer a high output, low maintenance and exceptional economy.
When the engine is combined with the company's new gearboxes, CP propellers and control systems, the L27/38 is an integrated propulsion package having a big appeal for fishing vessels needing 2040 to 3060 kW (3000 to 4500 hp) at 800 rpm.
MAN B&W Alpha sees the engine as an ideal propulsion package for medium sized fishing vessels and so it is to slowly phase out its older generation L28/32.
