A SCIENTIST from Dublin's Trinity College has called for the return of chewing parts of crabs, lobsters and crayfish to promote healthy teeth, especially for teething babies.

Zoologist Frank Jeal read a recent article on the use of crushed shrimp shells in toothpaste, sparking his thoughts on traditional remedies found in Irish history. He said: "It reminded me that crab and lobster claws were once used as 'teething rings' for babies. I tracked down the original reference to this in a vintage text, An Essay Towards a Natural History of the County of Dublin, written by John Rutt in 1772."
