FURTHER clashes between Japan and Russia off the Kuril Islands have left a Japanese fisherman dead from gunshot wounds with Russia detaining the rest of the crew and their vessel.
Japan has registered a strong protest against Russia's conduct, demanding the release of the vessel and crew, also labelling Russia's actions as "unacceptable."
The four islands - named the Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan - were claimed by Russia at the end of World War II, but Tokyo has long demanded their return.
