Skipper Pål Roaldsnes of the Norwegian trawler Stornes is cutting his operating costs by flying the ship’s trawl doors high off the seabed while the trawl stays on the bottom.
He is fishing with a combination of a semi-pelagic trawl and a pair of Thyborøn type 15VF pelagic doors. And he tells FNI that he has been able to fish as effectively as before, but with lower costs.
He reports that this gear combination offers great possibilities for trawling by keeping the doors off the bottom.
