THE DEATH of former Hull trawler skipper, acclaimed as Britain's leading fisherman, marks the end of an era.

Bill Brettell was the only skipper to win the prestigious 'Silver Cod' a record four times for landing the biggest catch in a year in the 1960s.

A friendly face to fishermen across Hull, his incredible catches earned him the fame of being the country's top skipper. He died last week aged 70 after fighting a long battle against serious illness.

Born in Gipsyville, he went to Francis Askew School, North Road, before going to work on the docks when he was just 14 years of age.

He
