Trawlers Bara Pen Dez and Bara An Ty have frequently fished as a pair before, often fishing for tuna and hake during the summer with pelagic pair gear, but the pair twin-rig bottom gear is a very new departure.

 

“They are fishing at 100 to 200m for monk, megrim, ray, cod and pollock and other demersal species,” Le Drezen’s trawl gear designer Jean Roullot said.

 

“We can still make improvements and the catch rates have been similar to two boats each fishing with their own sets of twin-rig gear on three warps, but with a fuel bill that is 10% less,” he said.

 

Skipper Jean-François Boulaire of the Bara Pen Dez said that he would like to see the spread of the gear improved further, although this is difficult on the hard grounds they usually fish, placing the gear on small patches between the hardest areas.
