WELL KNOWN West Coast fish merchant Archie Lawrie of Mallaig has died aged 66.

Christened Archibald Williamson Lawrie, he was born in Glasgow in 1939 and was known as "Wee Jaffy" ö a nickname inherited from his father and one synonymous with the Mallaig fish trade.

He married Flora MacKinnon in Kilmuir, Skye in April 1966 and was working on board MacBrayne's ferry Clansman when his father was hospitalised for a lengthy period. This led to a career re-evaluation and the formation, with his brother George, of Lawrie & Sons in 1969, and the building of a kippering/smoking/fish yard in 1972.
