Increased global demand for pelagic fish gave greater significance to this summer's North Sea herring fishery, which traditionally reaches its peak in August. Higher herring prices have been welcomed by the Scottish pelagic fleet, which in the last three years has seen 11 new vessels. These have been designed to deliver optimum quality catches, enabling their skippers to better compete with the modern pelagic boats from neighbouring countries.
Delivered last October for Shetland skipper John Peter Duncan by Solstrand of Tomrefjord, the Skipsteknisk-designed 76m Altaire LK 429 is the largest fresh midwater trawler in the UK fleet.
