Veramaris, a Netherlands-based producer of algae-based alternative feed ingredients, plans to double capacity at its US plant in the next few years to meet a looming worldwide supply gap in fish oil used by the aquaculture sector, the company’s CEO said on Tuesday.

Gertjan de Koning said the expansion of the plant in Blair, Nebraska, would take the company’s production of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA – eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid – to a level comparable to the output of the entire menhaden fishery.
