Aquaculture feed company Biomar has commissioned a new dedicated algal oil facility at its Wesley Vale factory in northwest Tasmania in an effort to reduce its reliance on fish oil.

AlgalPrimeDHA is the result of collaboration between the Danish aquaculture feed company and algae-based food ingredient manufacturer Corbion.

After successful trials last year, BioMar launched its AlgalPrime system earlier this month and has already seen an increase in demand from farmers.

The research and development on algal-based ingredients at Biomar dates back to 2013, with extensive internal and external research projects conducted before producing commercial feeds with microalgae.
