Norway’s aquaculture industry is facing a supply chain crisis as a prolonged political deadlock over quota allocation for blue whiting — a key ingredient in fish feed — threatens to eliminate the species' sustainability certifications, a top executive at feed giant Skretting warned.
The continued failure of Norway, the European Union, United Kingdom, Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland -- the so-called 'Coastal States' -- to reach an agreement on blue whiting quotas has led to fishing beyond scientific recommendations and the suspension of its Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification in 2021.
