China is poised to continue its streak of record fishmeal imports this year as demand for seafood prompts the aquaculture industry to increase production, said the Marine Ingredients Organization (IFFO) said.

The increased demand comes at a time of strong supply. Total fishmeal production in countries analyzed in a recent IFFO report was estimated at 2.443 million metric tons in 2021, a 3.6 percent increase over 2020.

Peru, Chile and India increased their fishmeal output in 2021, while northern European countries, the United States and African countries reported a combined decrease of more than 160,000 metric tons, year over year.
