A Norway-based environmental organization is proposing the use of chicken offal in salmon feed as a sustainable means to address a need for more feed ingredients in the country’s growing aquaculture sector.
The not-for-profit organization, Bellona, says waste from the poultry sector would be a suitable raw material for fish feed, due in part to its high digestibility. Major Norwegian chicken producer Norsk Kylling has previously stated its interest in collaborating with the aquaculture feed industry.
“This type of waste can be an important resource, especially at a time when we see the need for more sustainable solutions in both food production and resource utilization,” Olav Fjeld Kraugerud, a senior adviser to Bellona, told IntraFish.
