A sharp decline in the North Sea sandeel catch this year has reduced availability of an important aquaculture feed ingredient in Europe, with prices in the region increasing as a result, feed industry sources told IntraFish.
The significant drop in availability of North Sea sandeel could have “significant consequences” for the entire European aquaculture sector, according to Marine Ingredients Denmark, the country’s fishmeal and fish oil producers' association.
Denmark holds the biggest quota for North Sea sandeel. The country’s fishery landed just 63 percent of its total quota of 141,636 metric tons for the 2024 season, which ended in July, Marine Ingredients Denmark said in a statement.
