Fishmeal production in China is likely to decline this year after a “remarkable” increase in 2023, due mainly to limited resources and a downward trend in prices, the China Director of The Marine Ingredients Organisation (IFFO) said on Wednesday.

China’s domestic fishmeal production in 2023 is estimated at a decade-high 623,000 metric tons, according to a presentation by Maggie Xu to the IFFO Annual Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. Seventeen percent of this total was produced from byproducts.

The last time annual production hit similar heights was in 2013, according to a slide presented by Xu.
