The European Commission has authorized the use of genetically modified (GM) soybean in food and animal feed, after a scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded it is as safe as its conventional counterpart.
Soy is a key ingredient in aquaculture feed.
The commission’s decision allows imports of GM soybean for food and feed, but does not permit the product to be cultivated within the European Union, according to a statement released on July 4.
The assessment ensures a high level of protection for human and animal health, as well as the environment, the commission said.
