Scottish biotech company MiAlgae, which uses byproducts from the whisky industry to produce omega-3 for fish feed, has secured £14 million (€16.7 million/$18.6 million) in funding to build an industrial-scale production facility in Scotland.
The company grows microalgae by repurposing nutrient-rich wastewater from whisky distillation, providing an alternative source of omega-3 for fish oil.
MiAlgae said in a statement it had reached commercial scale of its NaturAlgae product at its demonstrator site in Balfron, Stirlingshire. The company said it is now gearing up to develop an industrial-scale production facility.
