The cover story in this month’s Fishing News International looks at the problem of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and the effect it is having on world  fish stocks.

IUU is a problem raised from time to time by governments and economic bodies such as those in the European Union – however, much of the actual illegal fishing takes place in African waters by boats flagged to countries all over the world.

In the Gear Focus section of the same issue, we look at long lining technology that  involves the use of selective hooks to ensure sustainability in this fishery.

Our Q&A is with Juana Parada, general manager of ORPAGU, the organization of A Guarda Longliners in Spain.

Parada is convinced that the future direction for the group is vertical integration and reaching a diversified customer base through more value-added products.
