Aquaculture in indigenous communities

Promoting aquaculture in aboriginal communities in Australia’s northern territory made for an interesting discussion at a conference session this morning.

Aboriginal people own 85 percent of the coastline and intertidal waters in the territory and many government-funded projects have sought – and generally failed - to help these communities set up aquaculture operations.

Analyzing why these projects have failed, Ann Fleming of the Northern Territory’s Aquaculture Branch said the main barriers were socio-cultural.
