If algal fuel takes off as a serious alternative to oil, the scope for aquaculture is immense.

This past November, three major airlines – the now-defunct Continental Airlines, United Airlines and Japan Airlines – all flew Boeing jumbo jets that were partly fueled with algal biodiesel.

It was a breakthrough for the algae industry, but everyone involved, from the companies that produce algal biodiesel to the aerospace giant whose planes could soon be fueled by them, say that there are a lot of challenges to overcome before similar flights become commonplace.
