Is the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) leading us toward a single, all-encompassing FAO eco-label?
Last week, GSSI, the fledgling sustainable seafood certification benchmarking service, passed a milestone with its approval of the Alaska RFM Certification Program. RFM is now the first and only GSSI-recognized sustainable seafood scheme.
But the program and its heavy-hitting founding fathers expect that all certification programs will be run through the GSSI sieve as a way to measure if each is "credible," which means it is meeting the FAO guidelines that govern the basics of a sustainable seafood certification and eco-labeling program.
