"PREMIER research for premium shrimp" is the stated mission of Thailand's respected Centre of Excellence for Shrimp Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, aka Centex Shrimp.

With currently around 40 scientists, this multidisciplinary laboratory focuses on "healthy and healthful domesticated shrimp cultivated in biosecure ponds with no negative environmental impact".

The centre, supported by Mahidol University and Biotec, the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, was formed in 2001 by amalgamating labs from Mahidol's departments of anatomy, biochemistry and biotechnology.

Centex works hard at becoming a national and regional focus for research and training in shrimp molecular biology and biotechnology, and serves to coordinate cooperative research.
