An interest in spotted red snapper farming isn't a new phenomenon.

Both Costa Rica and a government laboratory in Panama were conducting research on the idea of farming the species even in the early 1990s, University of Miami Professor and Director of Aquaculture Daniel Benetti told IntraFish.

It wasn't until more recently, however, that Costa Rican company Martec, one of the largest maritime companies in Central America, made the idea a reality.

"(Martec) decided to grab the bull by the horns and take it to the next level," Benetti said.
