Spain’s Oceanographic Institute (IEO) is the world’s first organization to produce fertile bluefin tuna eggs spawned from fish raised in captivity, the agency said.

Scientists Aurelio Ortega and Fernando de la Gandara are the first ones to close the biological cycle of bluefin tuna, according to the institute, the pinnacle of a 10-year research project supported by the regional government of Murcia and companies related to the sector.

The bluefin tuna now in captivity came from tuna eggs collected from reproductive cages run by fish farming company Caladeros del Mediterraneo, a subsidiary to Grupo Ricardo Fuentes e Hijos.
