Vertically integrated Spanish group Ricardo Fuentes e Hijos is leading the Atlantic bluefin tuna farming drive after harvesting, for the first time, fertile tuna eggs from fish born and grown in captivity.

Through different projects with subsidiaries Caladeros del Mediterraneo and Tuna Graso, and strong investments both from private and public funding, the group managed to complete the different stages until closing the cycle.

“It is something no one in the world has done -- they do it in Japan with Pacific tuna, but no one does it with Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin,” David Martinez, deputy director at Ricardo Fuentes e Hijos told IntraFish.
