A RUSSIAN cooperative venture has plans to change from traditional Greenland seal hunting to pup capture and ongrowing before slaughter. Instead of slaughtering 'white coat' pups, the Chapoma cooperative in Murmansk will use its quota of 9800 to ongrow the animals in open air pens for about four weeks, until they are at the 'grey coat' stage.
