SCOTTISH trawl maker Jackson Trawls has had promising results from its early work mounting transverse netting in mackerel trawls towed by the Peterhead pelagic trawler Quantus, says Mark Buchan of Jackson Trawls.

"We were at the SINTEF flume tank in Denmark last year and saw some of the work they have been doing there in turning the netting through 90infinity to reduce turbulence in the bag and to reduce fish bruising.

"We were very interested to see the volume created in the tunnel of the net and the increased water flow, but it wasn't until later that we thought of adapting this for pelagic fishing."
