THE FISHERIES Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) has initiated a national sub-programme aimed at establishing rock lobster (Puerulus spp) farming in Australia.
A Phase One investment of A$1.5 million (@US$945,000) follows 12 months of workshops involving industry and research bodies aimed at boosting earnings from what is Australia's most valuable seafood export.
Sub-programme leader Robert van Barneveld says he had intended to make the R&D effort a "copy-book example" of co-operation and scientific integration.
"My principal role is to co-ordinate the work and establish and maintain first-class links between industry and science Australia-wide," he says.
"I'm
